     Dr Joseph Cuschieri MD, FACS was born on 15 October 1968. He married Abby C. Collins. Biography Joseph Cuschieri M.D. earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan, and his Medical Degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residence and surgical critical care fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Upon completion of his clinical training, he completed a 2-year NIH T32 Fellowship in the field of Trauma/Burn/Inflammation.

Dr. Cuschieri is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery with subspecialty certification in Surgical Critical Care.

Upon completion of his fellowship in 2002, Dr. Cuschieri joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. After a couple of years he left Cincinnati and returned to Seattle, joining the faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine where he served as the Medical Director of Surgical Critical Care, Interim Associate Medical Director of Critical Care, Associate Medical Director of Surgical Services, and Program Director of Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Cuschieri left Washington and came to UCSF in 2021 to join the faculty in the Department of Surgery as Professor and Trauma Medical Director at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Dr. Cuschieri currently serves as Principal Investigator, Co-Principle investigator, or Co-Investigator on 3 federally funded grants and has authored or co-authored over 170 peer-reviewed articles and more than 10 book chapters. His national service includes active participation in major trauma, critical care, and surgical societies including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Society of Surgical Critical Care Program Directors. He also serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.

Dr. Joseph Cuschieri Appointed Chief of Surgery at ZSFG The Department of Surgery is excited to announce that Joseph Cuschieri, MD, FACS, Professor of Surgery at UCSF and current Trauma Medical Director at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), will be the Division Chief of Surgery at ZSFG starting January 2023. Dr. Cuschieri has been serving as the interim Division Chief of Surgery since September 1, 2021.  

Dr. Cuschieri earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan and his MD from Wayne State University in Detroit. He completed his general surgery residency and surgical critical care fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital and an NIH T32-Fellowship in Trauma/Burn at the University of Washington. Dr. Cuschieri is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.

Dr. Cuschieri has mentored over 70 outstanding students, residents, and fellows, many of whom are national and internal leaders in trauma and critical care. He served as the Program Director of Surgical Critical Care at the University of Washington before joining the faculty at UCSF in April of 2021 and was awarded the John K. Stevenson Faculty Teaching Award in Surgery at that time. He remains active in clinical and basic science research in the areas of injury and inflammation and has been funded by several national organizations, including the NIH.

Dr. Cuschieri has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters in these areas. He has been active nationally, and his national service has included active roles in the American College of Surgeons Committee of Trauma as the State of Washington Chair of the Committee of Trauma and as a member of the National Committee. Presently, he is Chair of the Critical Care Committee and a member of the Board of Managers for the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Furthermore, he has been active in the Association for Academic Surgery, Society of University Surgeons, Surgical Infection Society, Shock Society, and Society of Surgical Critical Care Program Directors.
